How to Install Flutter in VS Code

Flutter in fact is one of the most fascinating emerging technologies which might impact the future of native application development. Long story short, you can code android, iOS and web applications with a single code base. Although it provides a lot of packages which gives us access to native functionalities of applications it is not yet considered as a better alternative over native Java or Swift applications. In this article, we will discuss about how to install Flutter in your system and use VS Code as an Editor for creating mobile applications.

Installing flutter is pretty much easy in any system whether it be Windows/Mac/Linux. I have broken down the procedure into 3 simple steps.

Step 1: Download the Flutter SDK

Flutter is an open-source UI kit for building beautiful User Interfaces from a single code base developed by Google. It is available for free in github and also available in Googles official website. You can either clone the repository from Github or directly download the archived version from google servers. Please make sure get the latest stable version to ensure a bug free development experience.

Extract the flutter SDK to C:\

Once the download is complete, open the zip file and extract its contents to C:\ drive of your system. After extraction is complete, your C:\ drive should contain a folder named flutter.

Now you have successfully installed flutter in your system.

Step 2: Setting the Environment Variables (Windows)

Now to couple any Code Editor with the flutter SDK, we need to map the path in our environment variable to the installation folder of SDK. In order to do that follow these steps,

  • Open search from start menu and type ‘env
  • Select Edit the system Environment Variables from the suggestions.
  • In System Properties dialog, Click on Environment Variables on the bottom right corner.
  • Double click on variable PATH.
  • Click on New and add C:\flutter\bin
  • Click OK on all the dialogs.

For Mac or Linux users here is a detailed instruction from Google on how to setup Flutter in your system.

If you have not yet installed Android Studio or Xcode( only for Mac users), I recommend you install these first as flutter uses a lot of the SDKs, emulators and tools available in these software. You can find the detailed tutorial for installation of android studio here.

Step-3: Install Plugin in VS Code

Follow these steps to install flutter plugin in your VS Code.

  • Open VS Code and switch over to Extensions tab.
  • Search for flutter and select the first option.
